Bird baths can be mounted on a pedestal, attached to the edge of a deck or windowsill or hung from a tree. Birds prefer to use baths that are located near cover in case they are approached by a predator, so be sure you have a place mapped out for the bird bath before you decide on a type. Some bird baths are mechanical such as fountain bird baths and heated bird baths. Fountains are nice because they offer the calming effect of a water feature as well as a draw for wandering birds. Heated bird baths offer open water even when its freezing outside. You can also buy separate heating elements to add to existing bird baths. Birds will flock to a heated bird bath because open water can be scarce in the winter. They will probably also return in the spring. If you have a bird bath that requires electricity, be sure you have a location for it in proximity to a power outlet.
