First, analyze your budget. If you’re strapped for cash, you can invest in what are known as FRS two-way radios. These operate over an extremely short range -- although some manufacturers may clam that FRS radios can reach about 10,000 feet, the truth is that obstacles (such as boulders and shrubs) and ambient sound interference will shorten your range. If you need more powerful devices, consider GMRS two-way radios. These units cap out at around six or seven miles. But some manufacturers may claim longer ranges. Both FRS and GMRS devices should hold up under rugged conditions.
If you're shopping for accessories for an existing FRS or GMRS two-way, it’s a good idea to stick within brand. The privacy codes employed by various manufacturers often do not translate to other two-way radios. You might shop for extra features, such as vibration, GPS, and volume controls. If you're buying for a police department or other large agency, the number of channels available will be important. If you are simply purchasing two-way radios for your family or local paintball group, you'll be far more interested in clarity and range.
Finally, you may search for so-called scanning two-way radios. These devices can pick up signals given off by other people operating within your frequency or within similar frequencies. These devices are wonderful if you're looking to do reconnaissance.
