If you’ll be doing basic operations and do not require professional high end equipment, you’ll want to look for mini or micro component systems, also called shelf systems. These stereo systems are compact and less expensive, but still offer an incredible amount of sophistication. When shopping, be sure to select a model that offers at least a five disc CD changer, AM/FM radio with ample presets, and possibly one or two cassette decks if you have a tape collection that you’d like to be able to play. Some mini systems also offer turntables for record collectors. The standard speakers that come with these systems will be plenty powerful for casual listening or entertaining. Other features to look for include a remote control, sleep and alarm functions, bright, clear LED displays and the ability to program playback and shuffle between discs. It’s also imperative that the stereo you purchase be capable of playing CDR and CDRW discs, as well as MP3 files. This will enable you to burn discs or purchase music online and play it over your stereo.
