Much of the food for small pet is in the form of pellets. Some pellets are fortified with supplements and vitamins to give you pet added nutritional benefit. Pellets and all dry foods are practical choices because they can be left longer in the cage without going bad. Moist food spoils in no time and causes a foul odor if not removed. Its important to feed your small pet according to his dietary needs. Those needs may not be entirely met by a pellet or mixed pellet and dried food diet. You might have to supplement your pets diet with vitamins, vegetables, fruit and/or hay. Rabbits do best on a diet of pellet food in combination with alfalfa or timothy hay and raw vegetables and fruit. Hay is good for small pet teeth, as it helps keep them worn and clean. Hamsters, gerbils and guinea pigs also crave variety in their diets. Look for food mixes that address this craving. Ferrets are carnivores and need a primarily meat material diet. You can find pet food in many different sized packages, but buying in bulk will save you in the long run.
