When shopping for an SLR camera, it’s wise to look for a model that can also be operated on an automatic setting. This will come in handy when you need to take pictures quickly or want to hand the camera to someone else to take a picture. Most of the newer SLR models come standard with this convenient feature, but it’s wise to check. Also, it’s important to note that many SLR cameras are sold as bodies only, meaning that you need to purchase a lens separately. Keep this in mind when looking at prices, and make sure you factor in the cost of a lens or set of lenses into your total cost. In terms o manual controls, look for SLR cameras that allow you to experiment with different exposure methods, such as multiple exposures or prolonged exposures (a.k.a. time lapse photography). That will enable you to create artistic shots if you so desire. Also look for basic features such as LCD display of important exposure and focal information in the viewfinder, as well as a built-in flash for convenience. Keep in mind that flash photography is not as necessary in SLR cameras because they are designed to be able to take great photos in low light situations.
