To create a darkroom from scratch, you’ll need several expensive pieces of equipment. The photo development process is a very technical and complex art, but it is incredibly rewarding as well. Start by looking for a photo processing sink. These range in size and price, but you should expect to pay anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. If you’re a serious photographer, you’ll also want to look for a sink with built in cabinets to store extra supplies. Stainless steel is the best material for these sinks, as it will not react with photo chemicals, and will therefore be much easier to clean and maintain. When buying chemicals, measurement aids, photo paper, fixers, filters, developing trays, dyes and more, remember that buying in bulk will save you money. Particularly if you’ll be developing frequently, you’ll go through the chemicals quickly and will save yourself the hassle of having to replace them constantly. For one time purchases, such as developing tanks and lamps, remember that it may be worthwhile to pay a bit more to get longer-lasting equipment.
