This was Steve Spielberg's first seriously dramatic film, and it is a fine one at that. It is based on the novel by Alice Walker, set in the American south during slavery. It is powerful and moving, and the performance by Whoppi Goldberg is exceptional. One of the best films ever made on the subject of slavery.
