Jonathan Doyle's staging takes it down to almost a chamber opera. Where once the emotions were played big they are now small and understated. This is an excellent recording of Sondheim's "Sweeney Todd": intimate, gritty, and very effective.     Add Review Share Read Review   Original Broadway Recording - The Color Purple: A New Musical Usually when you see a show or hear a cast recording, you end up humming or singing some of the songs because they are so good. I hate to say it, but there are no songs on this CD that are catchy or even likeable. As fabulous as I assumed singer/actor John Lloyd Young (Frankie Valli) would be, I was not prepared for his incredible voice and talent. SEE THIS MUSICAL! And also buy the CD. Among its great tunes are Footloose, Let's Hear It For The Boy, and a tune I really love, Holding Out For A Hero. She loves the soundtrack because it includes all the hits from the movie without leaving any out. We have gotten many soundtracks that are incomplete, this one is not and it offers an experience by its self. It features a nice selection of some of the best of the genre, and they all sound fantastic regardless of age.
